Scientists and researchers are challenged with finding institutional information that is located across disparate content sources and spread across multiple applications, different platforms, and external databases.
Further, legacy data from retired applications is often lost forever and important data may only exist in paper or electronic format. Unlocking and leveraging this critical information within emails, documents and lab notebooks is virtually impossible with most information technologies being used today.
NewLane SURF© Research and Development Solutions enable scientists and researchers to unlock, unify, search and access this valuable information. By being able to leverage information when you need it, where you need it, your company can speed drug and device development by fostering new discoveries, finding safety signals sooner to drive innovation and accelerate drug and device development.
From Discovery, Development and Commercialization of the drug or device, NewLane SURF Solutions are designed for rapid deployment and integration with key technologies for easy retrieval of structured and unstructured content both quickly and securely regardless of location, application or technology platform.
Real World Results
THE CHALLENGE
A Pharmaceutical company conducted research across multiple international locations. In each of these locations the scientists maintain independent records and databases for chemical libraries, compound structures and assay results. Overall the lack of collaboration and the limited sharing of information is impairing the effectiveness of the research organization and slowing overall progress.
THE ORIGINAL PROCESS
Each location maintained it's records independently of the other locations. In each case different technologies were used, in some cases data was maintained in spreadsheet format, in some in home grown applications and in still other commercial applications.
The problems developed…

When information needed to be shared between the scientists for collaboration or verification. The information did not contain the same metadata or standards and could not be easily compared. Additionally the sheer number of data sources made it difficult to access all of the data.
THE NEWLANE SOLUTION
An enterprise effort was undertaken to define the common taxonomy and structure of all of the data. Once the information was normalized then a single comprehensive systems was implemented that would allow for multisite search retrieval and comparisons.
THE NEWLANE RESULT
The time it took to access the correct information was greatly reduced and the amount of rework that was performed dropped dramatically. Overall, the new processes greatly improved the efficiency of the R&D group and helped speed time to market.
